Homicide detective Mandi Murphy had seen enough bloodshed on the streets of Houston to last a lifetime. After a botched drug bust left a friend dead, she wanted out of the city. Peaceful little Sawmill Springs seemed like the perfect spot to start over. Six weeks on patrol proved the town to be as quiet and serene as she´d imagined. When things soured between FBI agent Kayla Dixon and her lover, she was ready for a change from the fast-paced life she was living. Her father, the police chief in Sawmill Springs, offered her a job, and she decided a change of pace was just what she needed. Her wish for slow and peaceful didn´t materialize, however, as mere hours after she started her first shift, a prominent citizen was gunned down. The two women are thrust together to solve the murder and return Sawmill Springs to the sleepy small town the residents expect. As the investigation grows, so does their attraction. There´s just one problem - Murphy thinks Kayla is straight. Kayla admits to a failed marriage when she was 18, and an ambiguous affair with another FBI agent convinces Murphy to steer clear of her. Kayla´s innocent flirting is met with skepticism and doubt...and temptation. Another murder not only strengthens their bond as partners but has them fighting to escape the clutches of a murderer. No longer able to ignore the budding attraction between them, they must decide if they are willing to start over...this time, together. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Nicol Zanzarella. When sculptor and author Barb Davis is given an NEA grant to pair original feminist sculptures with searing first-person essays on transitions in women´s lives, she organizes a two-week writing retreat with 12 of the best, brightest, and most notorious lesbian authors in the business. But in between regularly scheduled happy hours and writing sessions, the women enter a tournament bass-fishing competition, receive life coaching from a wise-cracking fish named Phoebe, and uncover a subterranean world of secrets and desires that is as varied and elusive as the fish that swim in the waters of Lake Champlain. Set on the beautiful shores of Vermont´s Lake Champlain, Backcast is richly populated with an expansive cast of endearing and outrageous characters who battle writer´s block, quirky locals, personal demons, unexpected attractions, and even each other during their two-week residency. For Barb and each of her 12 writers, the stakes in this fast-moving story are high, but its emotional and romantic payoffs are slow and sweet. Filled with equal parts laugh-out-loud humor and breathtaking pathos, Backcast serves up a sometimes irreverent, sometimes sobering look at the hidden lives of women, and how they laugh, love, lose, and blunder through their own search for meaning. 1. To make a small fortune, start with a large fortune and open a bakery. That´s the advice Marcus Wilson has heard. Unfortunately, Marcus doesn´t have a large fortune - just a bakery, A Slice of Heaven, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and the determination to make it successful. He needs more help than he can afford, so when he hires accountant Gregory Southland, it´s for hours in the shop as well as on the books. Gregory takes a second job at the bakery to help pay the bills now that his health is improving. Soon, he´s looking forward to spending time with Marcus, but as the business - and their relationship - grows, so do the complications: First Marcus´ stepmother involves him in a cause that could give the bakery a reputation it doesn´t need. Then Marcus and Gregory disagree over whether to involve A Slice of Heaven in a civil rights dispute. To top it off, Gregory´s ex-boyfriend makes an appearance just when he is at his most vulnerable. But the greatest complication by far is Marcus and Gregory´s struggle to learn to trust each other and themselves, especially when it comes to baking up matters of the heart. 1. Language: English. One morning in the spring of 1958 I woke up in my room at the Hotel Alexandria with a paralyzing hangover (which was not unusual) and an idea for a book (which was). I sat in front of my typewriter, and within a few hours I had produced a chapter-by-chapter outline of a novel. I had all the characters sketched out and knew how they´d relate to one another, and how the rather elementary storyline would resolve itself. I even had a title: Shadows. At the time I was working as an editor at a shady literary agency, but I´d already arranged for my departure, as I´d be resuming college in the fall in Ohio. Sometime in May I gave up my room at the Alexandria and went home to Buffalo, where I turned that outline into a book. My agent sent it to Crest Books, then the country´s premier publisher of lesbian fiction. They spent a couple of months reading it and thinking it over, during which time I wrote and sold several lesser books to Harry Shorten´s Midwood Books. Then, a couple of months after I´d returned to Antioch and gone through a lot of sturm und drang that needn´t concern us here, Crest accepted Shadows. They changed my title to Strange Are the Ways of Love. They also changed my pen name. I´d known a lesbian novel ought to have a woman´s name on it, and I picked one. They decided on Leslie Evans instead, so it could be gender-neutral, and then switched it to Lesley Evans, which made it more specifically female. Welcome to publishing, young man. It´s clear to me now, almost 60 years later, that the book ought to set sail under its original title, and since I´m republishing it myself, that´s a decision I get to make. It´s also clear to me that Shadows is in fact Jill Emerson´s very first novel, as it´s far more of a piece with Warm And Willing and Enough of Sorrow than with anything else I´ve written. So that´s how I´ll publish it, right? As Shadows, dammit, by Jill Emerson. 1. Language: English. Narrator: P. J. Morgan.
