Most of us believe that we will finally feel satisfied and content with our lives when we get the good news we have been waiting for, find a healthy relationship, or achieve one of our personal goals. However, this rarely happens. Good fortune is often followed by negative emotions that overtake us and result in destructive behaviors. "I don't deserve this," "this is too good to be true," or any number of harmful thought patterns prevent us from experiencing the joy and satisfaction we have earned. Sound familiar? This is what New York Times best-selling author Gay Hendricks calls the Upper Limit Problem, a negative emotional reaction that occurs when anything positive enters our lives. The Upper Limit Problem not only prevents happiness, but it actually stops us from achieving our goals. It is the ultimate life roadblock. In The Big Leap, Hendricks reveals a simple yet comprehensive program for overcoming this barrier to happiness and fulfillment, presented in a way that engages both the mind and heart. Working closely with more than 1,000 extraordinary achievers in business and the arts, from rock stars to Fortune 500 executives, whose stories are featured in these pages, the book describes the four hidden fears that are at the root of the Upper Limit Problem. The Big Leap delivers a proven method for first identifying which of these four fears prevents us from reaching our personal upper limit, and then breaking through that limitation to achieve what Hendricks refers to as our Zone of Genius. Hendricks provides a clear path for achieving our true potential and attaining not only financial success but also success in love and life. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gay Hendricks. Revision with unchanged content. Because Catholic doctrine about homosexuality is contradictory and funda mentally homophobic, some lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) teachers find themselves having to deny their sexuality and resort to hiding in a metaphorical Catholic closet when teaching in Canadian Catholic schools. Educational researcher Tonya Callaghan employs a multi-method qualitative framework to uncover how homophobia is institutionalized in these schools. Callaghan first theorizes the problem and examines pertinent Catholic documents as well as key Canadian legal decisions. Then, using interviews with six LGBTQ teachers and her own experience as a lesbian teacher, Callaghan retells the teachers stories in the form of life-narrative vignettes. This varied research design provides much needed insight into a previously untold aspect of Canadian schooling. It offers a valuable perspective that may be beneficial to LGBTQ teachers and their colleagues, school administrators, government officials, teachers unions, and human rights activists. This book also may be of interest to researchers in the fields of education, sociology, law, ethics, sexuality studies, and religion.
By following Nietzsche's genealogical method, this book proposes that Epicurean immanence emerged through the conceptualisation of all existence within the cosmos and nature. Immanence developed as an atomistic response to the transcendent philosophies of Socrates and Aristotle which opposed Democritean materialism. Nietzsche recognised that the increasing popularity of Platonism in late antiquity led to the event of Christianity, which dominated Western thought until its success eventually destroyed the conditions that maintained it. Nietzsche predicted that in the light of Christianity's demise, mankind would be plunged into a state of crisis and unparalleled nihilism. In response, he proposed that the body and spirit must be reunited in an act of overcoming, and those capable of that act would 'inherit the earth'. Immanence, for Nietzsche, is this unifying act and inheritance, and he demonstrates that redemptive doctrines such as Epicurus' ataraxia, modelled on nihilism, must be rejected and overcome by a philosophy modelled on Heiterkeit (cheerfulness). It is in this respect that his philosophy from The Gay Science onwards can be recognised as a discourse on immanence.
This book explores the process of men reconciling their spirituality and homosexuality. Using an organic transpersonal research method, 12 gay men participated as coresearchers in semi-structured interviews. The major themes of the study were: Self-denial, Exploration, Affirmation, and Self-acceptance. Some of the ancillary themes were: Early spiritual connection, Early awareness of same-sex attraction, Early awareness of societal/familial attitudes about gayness, Rejection by others because of gayness, and Lack of models for how to be. Coresearchers were also asked questions to illuminate shifting meaning ascribed to spirituality and gayness over time. The majority reported that the meaning of gayness had become more positive over time. Less homogeneity was found in the shifting meaning of spirituality. The research project supports that the spiritual journey of gay men has unique features, and posits new ways to research the intersections of homosexuality and spirituality.
