To better understand Chinese students perspectivestoward their gay and lesbian peers, interviews wereconducted in a Chinese university. The participantsdid not believe that gay and lesbian people fit intoChinese society, however, they are becoming more openand tolerant on gay and lesbian issues in recentyears because of the influence of technologicalinnovation, media, and Western culture. The findingssuggest a degree of acceptance of gays and lesbiansthough the participants simultaneously distancedthemselves from their homosexual peers. Theyperceived the university to be a safe place for gayand lesbian students in the sense that nobody wouldhurt them, but they did not see the university as awelcoming place. The interview transcripts wereanalyzed within a Chinese cultural and socialcontext. Offering a realistic picture of heterosexualstudents perspectives might encourage them to reducediscrimination against their gay and lesbian peers, and to create a better learning environment for bothheterosexual and homosexual students.

Journeys of Heterosexual Evangelical Christians...

A qualitative research study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 12 heterosexuals with an evangelical Christian background who had changed from anti-gay to pro-gay in their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors regarding same-sex sexuality and lesbian and gay people. Interviews were analyzed using categorical content analysis to reveal 10 key themes with 11 additional subthemes. Holistic form narrative analysis was done to reveal two primary patterns with multiple process steps defining the structure of the journeys from anti-gay to pro-gay. A key finding was a personal crisis, typically unrelated to same-sex sexuality, preceded the changes in beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. The crisis created critical reflection on their previously held beliefs and assumptions regarding what they had been taught by their prior evangelical churches. The crisis and subsequent growth also created openness later in their journeys for participants to rethink their moral positions on same-sex sexuality and challenge their previously held assumptions about lesbian and gay people. The journeys from anti-gay to pro-gay are theorized as conversion processes with transformative learning.

The Making of a Gay Muslim

This book highlights the lived experiences of gay Muslims in Malaysia, where Islam is the majority and official religion, and in Britain, where Muslims form a religious minority. By exploring how they negotiate their religious and sexual identities, Shah challenges the notion that Islam is inherently homophobic and that there is an unbridgeable divide between 'Islam' and the 'West'. Shah also gained access to gay Muslim networks and individuals for his in-depth research in both countries, and the book investigates the different ways that they respond to everyday anti-homosexual or anti-Muslim sentiments. Amid the many challenges they confront, the gay Muslims whom Shah encountered find innovative and meaningful ways to integrate Islam and gay identity into their lives. The Making of a Gay Muslim will appeal to students and scholars with an interest in contemporary Islam, religion, gender and sexuality.
